A Poplar Paedophile, Sajidur Rashid Tipu, has been sentenced for non-recent child sex abuse as the Metropolitan Police Service changes its approach to exploitation cases and victim support.

Sajidur Rashid Tipu, 51 (15.06.73), of Canton Street, Poplar, was sentenced to 12 years and six months in jail by Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday, June 28. He was also granted a 15-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a 15-year restraining order against the two victims.

He was found guilty of 15 counts of historic child sexual abuse against two girls who he knew.

The conviction comes as the Met upholds its commitment to protecting vulnerable women and children from harmful predators, and it encourages victims to disclose sexual abuse, whether recent or not.

Met investigators launched an investigation into Sajidur Rashid Tipu in February 2019 when one of his victims reported the crimes to Bethnal Green Police Station, telling officers that Sajidur Rashid Tipu had caressed and assaulted her throughout her youth and that she wanted justice. The other victim also stepped forward.

Sajidur Rashid Tipu was arrested at Heathrow Airport on February 24, 2021, while returning to London from Bangladesh.

Throughout the investigation and court process, a dedicated specialist officer served as a point of contact for the victims, calming and caring, and directing them to professional charities such as Nia, an east London rape crisis charity.

Met police collaborated extensively with the victims throughout the investigation, methodically recording and detailing nearly fifteen years of sexual abuse in a sympathetic manner in order to establish a strong and comprehensive case against the perpetrator.

Detective Constable Paul Clare, who headed the investigation and specialises in child exploitation, stated: “I want to recognise the bravery of these two young women who came forward; their courage has been captivating throughout this process.

“This offence occurred throughout the formative years of these girls’ lives and caused them significant psychological trauma. I’m delighted Sajidur Rashid Tipu has finally seen justice.

“I hope this is a sign for any other victims out there who have experienced exploitation in their youth that they can and should come forward, we will do everything we can for you and you will be listened to and supported.”

People who sexually abuse children utilise secrecy to ensure that their assault is not found and reported. There can be physical or behavioural symptoms that a child is being abused; youngsters frequently how us rather than tell us something wrong.

  • A child is suddenly experiencing nightmares or other sleeping problems.
  • Becoming reclusive or clinging.
  • The child engages in sexual behaviour with toys or objects.
  • Personality changes, such as angry outbursts or changes in eating habits.
  • Receiving unexpected gifts such as money, a cell phone, and/or fancy clothing.
